Historical Designation

What Designation Means

Designation is a voluntary action taken by the property owner. Following a request for designation and meeting the eligibility requirements, the owner has the option of placing a façade easement on their structure.

The Historical Commission has developed an incentive program to encourage historic preservation. Incentives for property owners may include technical assistance, grants and matching funds.

Designation Incentive Program

San Miguel County provides a grant of up $1,000 to each landowner who designates a standing historic structure to the County Historic Register. The purpose of the grant is to help defray costs associated with the nomination process, historic structure maintenance or rehabilitation.

Owners or organizations incurring expense in the above referenced categories may apply for reimbursement by documenting expenses paid or by submitting current bills to be paid by the County directly to the vendor.
